The global risks report for 2026, released before the Davos Economic Forum, identifies the primary threat as increased geopolitical and economic risks in a new era of competition. It appears that instability is predicted for the next two years. Geoeconomic competition and economic armament, interstate conflicts, regional instability, weakening international cooperation, technology-based risks, and economic instability will be among the global challenges.
Fake news and disinformation rank second in the two-year forecast. For our country, the main risks included in the 2026 report are cybersecurity, misinformation, and disinformation.
Azerbaijan has actually been the target of deliberate disinformation campaigns for many years. This dirty campaign continues in the post-conflict period, just as it did during the nearly 30-year occupation. Black PR campaigns against our country are regularly conducted under the guise of human rights and democracy. Methods such as deliberately distorting facts against our country, activating troll networks on social media, and spreading biased articles in foreign media are employed. Unfortunately, anti-national elements are used as tools in this process. National traitors operating abroad under the name of "bloggers" sacrifice state interests for commercial gain. In general, anti-national forces are the easiest tools for biased foreign centers. They are regularly used as pawns in one form or another.
Such disinformation aims to harm Azerbaijan's international reputation and national interests.
Combating the disinformation policy targeting our country is necessary. This is primarily important for protecting national security. The delivery of objective truths to the international community must be ensured.
Increasing media literacy and cooperation with international media and platforms are of great importance here.
Disinformation is one of the most dangerous "weapons" of the 21st century. Combating it is the responsibility not only of the state but also of the media, civil society, and every individual.
