On April 22, 2026, the official visit of Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs to Azerbaijan was marked by many historical moments.

Welcoming the high-ranking guest, Head of State Mr. Ilham Aliyev drew special attention to the history of relations between the two countries in both bilateral and multilateral meetings. In his statement to the press regarding the results of the visit, the Esteemed President Mr. Ilham Aliyev noted that this visit is not only an important stage in the development of relations between the two countries but also opens new perspectives for future cooperation. The Head of State emphasized that relations based on mutual trust and friendship have already been built on a solid foundation. Stating, “I am confident that this visit will further strengthen bilateral relations between our countries and create new opportunities for cooperation in various fields,” the Head of State also noted that the main directions of the bilateral agenda were extensively discussed during both one-on-one meetings and meetings with the participation of delegations.

Within the framework of the meetings, the development of political dialogue, expansion of economic cooperation, energy security, transport and logistics opportunities, and regional issues were at the center of attention. If we pay attention, we will see that there is a very strong framework for cooperation between our countries, and this framework creates a reliable basis for sustainable development. In this sense, the Declaration on Strategic Partnership signed nine years ago forms the legal basis of our relations. This document allowed relations between the two countries to rise to the highest level and ensured the systematic development of cooperation. It is precisely based on this document that the parties have consistently and purposefully worked towards expanding partnership in various fields. President Ilham Aliyev also emphasized that there is great potential for economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Latvia. In particular, cooperation opportunities are extensive in the areas of investment, increasing trade turnover, developing transport corridors, and the digital economy. As is known, Azerbaijan, with its favorable geographical position and developed transport infrastructure, plays the role of a reliable bridge between Europe and Asia, and in this regard, cooperation with Latvia can yield mutual benefits. The statement also touched upon issues of cooperation in the energy sector, specifically highlighting Azerbaijan's role in Europe's energy security.

Mr. President noted that Azerbaijan carries out successful cooperation with many countries as a reliable energy partner, and opportunities for cooperation with Latvia in this direction were also discussed. In addition, the development of humanitarian and cultural ties, cooperation in the field of education, and strengthening mutual understanding between peoples were also at the center of attention. Undoubtedly, cooperation in these areas serves to further deepen relations between the countries. We believe that this visit by the President of Latvia will make a significant contribution to the future development of Azerbaijan-Latvia relations and create conditions for the partnership to rise to a new stage.
