European Parliament calls on EU: "Urgent sanctions must be imposed against Israel"

More than 60 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have demanded an urgent meeting of the European Union (EU) foreign ministers and the imposition of concrete sanctions against Israel due to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The editorial office reports that a letter addressed to Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, sharply criticized the Union's "silent and inactive" stance regarding the events in Gaza. The appeal noted that this position was considered "complicity in crimes."

Belgian MEP Marc Botenga shared the text of the letter on his social media account, stating that European citizens expect real action, while the EU only issues statements. The letter specifically highlighted that more than 1,000 Palestinians lost their lives as a result of Israeli attacks on aid distribution points.

The MEPs put forward three main demands to Kaja Kallas:

  • An urgent reconvening of EU foreign ministers;
  • The imposition of sanctions against Israel and the Gaza Humanitarian Aid Fund established with Israeli-US support;
  • Increased pressure on EU member states to implement an arms embargo against Israel.

It should be recalled that at the previous meeting held on July 15, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia had proposed imposing sanctions against Israel and suspending the Partnership Agreement. However, no agreement was reached due to objections from some member states, primarily Germany and Austria.

This outcome was sharply criticized by human rights organizations and non-governmental bodies, while Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar described the non-adoption of any sanctions as a "diplomatic success for Tel Aviv."
