U.S. President Donald Trump's declaration of a complete closure of Venezuela's airspace has significantly restricted aviation movement in the region and escalated tensions between the parties. Trump announced the unconditional closure of the airspace to airlines, pilots, and other flight participants.
The editorial, citing The Washington Post, reports that immediately after the U.S. president's statement, the U.S. Air Force began intensive patrol flights in the international airspace near Venezuela. Trump's statement, "The airspace over and around Venezuela is completely closed," is considered a serious warning to airlines.
The Venezuelan government, however, stated that this U.S. move is a unilateral decision and announced that Washington has also halted the weekly migrant flights conducted as part of the repatriation of Venezuelans. President Nicolas Maduro noted that this decision creates humanitarian and logistical difficulties for the country.
Official Caracas emphasizes that the situation regarding the closure of airspace could negatively impact regional stability and considers the U.S. move to be contrary to international aviation practices. The hardening of the U.S. side's position further increases diplomatic tension in the region.
