Muhoozi Kainerugaba recently came to public attention with posts in which he demanded money from Turkey and used threatening language. Social media statements by Kainerugaba, who is the commander of the Uganda Defence Forces, have caused public outcry. At the same time, discussions have arisen regarding the posts by Kainerugaba, who is also the son of Yoweri Museveni.
Redaksiya reports that Kainerugaba was observed deleting his tweets on social media today. In his posts from his social media account, he used harsh language targeting Turkey. Kainerugaba claimed that if certain problems are not resolved, diplomatic relations with Turkey could be severed and air travel restrictions could be imposed within 30 days. Furthermore, statements alleging that Kainerugaba demanded 1 billion dollars from Turkey were also criticized by the public.
Following intense social media protests, Muhoozi Kainerugaba had to delete those posts. Following these developments, Adonia Ayebare, Uganda's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated that Kainerugaba's remarks regarding Turkey reflect some of Uganda's concerns. Ayebare noted that Uganda values its relations with Turkey, but this should not be against the country's sovereignty. He added that the parties can resolve the process through constructive talks and that there is no situation causing concern.
