Current US President Donald Trump has dismissed Federal Reserve System (Fed) Board member Lisa Cook from her position. Trump justified this decision by claiming Cook had “provided false information” in two mortgage documents.
The editorial office reports that Trump stated Cook had listed both homes as her “primary residence” in mortgage documents submitted for two different properties, merely two weeks apart. The President's letter included the statements: “It is impossible for you to be unaware of the first obligation when taking on the second. And it is impossible for you to plan to fulfill both.”
In his statement, Trump emphasized that the Fed is the most important institution determining the country's monetary policy and overseeing the banking system, saying, “The American people must have full confidence in the integrity of Fed members. Your potentially criminal conduct in your financial transactions has undermined this trust.”
Lisa Cook, however, rejected the accusations. She had previously refused calls for resignation, stating that the claims were based on a mortgage application submitted four years before she joined the Fed. According to Bloomberg, Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, demanded an investigation into Cook, while Trump had called on social media for “Cook to resign immediately.”
Experts believe that while this decision aims to protect the Fed's credibility, it will lead to new discussions and political tensions within the institution.
