US President Donald Trump will posthumously present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to conservative youth leader Charlie Kirk at a ceremony to be held at the White House on Tuesday. The event, to be held in the East Room, coincides with Kirk's 32nd birthday and brings together key figures of Trump's political movement. The ceremony coincides with Trump's return to Washington from Israel and Egypt after negotiating the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners as part of a Gaza ceasefire agreement, while also managing the impact of a federal government shutdown due to a budget dispute between Republicans and Democrats.

Redaksiya reports that Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University, at the beginning of a college campus tour intended to debate political topics with students. Kirk, a provocative figure with a massive following, has caused controversy by criticizing liberal ideas. He helped spread false rumors in Ohio that Haitian migrants were eating people's pets, called the Civil Rights Act a "big mistake," and stated that gun deaths were a reasonable price to pay to protect Second Amendment rights. His death coincides with a period of increasing political violence in the US. Trump supporters forcibly breached police lines on January 6, 2021, to prevent the certification of presidential election results; an assailant attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul with a hammer; a suspected arsonist set fire to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's mansion while the governor and his family were asleep; Minnesota House Democratic leader Melissa Hortman was killed in her home; and Trump faced two assassination attempts on the campaign trail last year.

Trump and his allies have cited Kirk's killing as a reason for a crackdown on left-wing groups they claim promote political violence. Vice President J.D. Vance, while hosting a special episode of Kirk's podcast last month, called for a large-scale government effort to investigate and dismantle left-wing organizations he claimed promoted violence in the country. On September 22, Trump designated "Antifa" as a domestic terrorist organization, even though the term antifa does not refer to a specific group and is widely used by anti-fascist protesters who lack an organized structure.
