As the Russia-Ukraine war continues, the scale of losses on both sides becomes increasingly apparent. The effects of the war are not limited to military operations alone but also have political and economic consequences. The future of this conflict remains uncertain, but the high level of losses and its repercussions have a profound impact on both countries.
Redaksiya reports that a new report by the U.S. Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) states that the total military personnel losses for Russia and Ukraine since February 2022 are approaching 2 million. The report notes that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not deterred by the high level of losses and casualties, and economic recession in Russia will not force the Kremlin to the negotiating table, at least on terms acceptable to Ukraine or Europe.
The CSIS report emphasizes that Putin can accept a high number of losses and casualties because the majority of these losses come from regions like the Far East and North Caucasus, rather than politically important areas for him such as Moscow and St. Petersburg. The report also states that despite pronouncements of battlefield advances in Ukraine, data indicates that Russia is paying an extraordinary price for minimal gains and is in decline as a great power. No great power has suffered such losses or casualties in any war since World War II.
Experts explain that Russia has suffered more losses than Ukraine due to several factors: Russia's inability to effectively conduct combined arms operations, poor tactics and training, corruption, low morale, and Ukraine's deep defense strategy. Analysts also note that Putin and his propaganda have achieved significant success in their disinformation campaign, particularly convincing some Western politicians in Washington that Russia's victory is inevitable, "despite evidence to the contrary."
Furthermore, it is reported that Ukraine has made significant advancements in the development of ground military robots, considerably surpassing Western companies in this field. Ukrainian robots are already performing all tasks, from logistics and reconnaissance to attack and defense. The CSIS report notes that from February 2022 to December 2025, Russia has lost 1.2 million military personnel, of whom 325,000 have been killed. U.S. analysts estimate Ukraine's military losses at 500,000-600,000, with 140,000 killed. According to analysts, the war will reach this psychological threshold "in the spring." Analysts note that Russia has suffered the most losses among military personnel since World War II.
