Putin Links Ukraine War to Western Policy

The situation around Ukraine has evolved into a complex geopolitical landscape, accompanied by increasing tensions on the international stage. Recent statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin reveal significant points regarding the roots and future prospects of the conflict. These statements also heighten concerns about the deterioration of relations between Western countries and Russia, and the potential for the conflict to expand geographically.

Redaksiya reports that on January 15, during a ceremony accepting credentials from ambassadors of 34 countries, Putin spoke of peace but also threatened Ukraine with the continuation of the war. He specifically proposed "returning to a substantive discussion of initiatives for a new and fair security architecture" and blamed Ukraine for the continuation of the war. According to him, the crisis around Ukraine is a direct consequence of Russia's interests not being taken into account and NATO's advance towards its borders. Putin stated that the West took these steps despite allegedly breaking promises made to the public. He also noted that the situation on the international stage is "increasingly degrading," and that diplomacy has been replaced by unilateral, even dangerous actions.

Institute experts emphasize that Putin's demands are broader than those outlined in the 28-point plan proposed by the US and subsequent peace plans. They note that Putin remains committed to his initial military objectives from 2021 and 2022, and these objectives are not limited to Ukraine alone. ISW states that if NATO had fulfilled the ultimatums put forward by Putin in late 2021 and mentioned in his January 15, 2026 speech, it would have led to the dissolution of NATO and a reassessment of the European security architecture. Analyses conducted by the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have concluded that the Russian dictator's military objectives are not limited to Ukraine. According to the Russian president, the war in Ukraine is a "direct consequence" of the West's failure to consider the interests of the Russian Federation, NATO's expansion, and the alleged violation of promises made to the public regarding this. Analysts state that Putin will not agree to a peace settlement that only pertains to Ukraine and does not involve a radical restructuring of NATO. In their opinion, the dictator is also interested in a radical restructuring of NATO.
