New York City Mayor Mamdani has signed a new executive order aimed at protecting undocumented migrants from operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). During the signing ceremony, the mayor referenced religious sources and quoted from the Holy Quran.

The editorial reports that in his speech, Mamdani recalled the event of Hijrah (migration), emphasizing that Prophet Muhammad was also forced to leave Mecca and was accepted in Medina. He drew attention to a verse in the Surah An-Nahl which states that those who migrate after suffering oppression for the sake of God will be rewarded with a good dwelling in this world, and also recalled the Prophet's saying, "Islam began as something strange and it will return to being strange, so glad tidings to the strangers," explaining this reality.

According to the mayor, these religious references illustrate the historical and moral context of the difficulties and forced displacement faced by migrants. In his opinion, the main goal of the city administration is to protect human rights, ensure safety, and strengthen social justice.

It is noted that the signed executive order aims to limit the cooperation of local authorities with ICE, strengthen the legal protection of migrants, and ensure their access to city services. This step has also reignited discussions surrounding immigration policy in the U.S. and has caused various reactions in society.
