Apple's recently introduced MacBook Neo, its most affordable laptop model, also stands out as the easiest to repair. The iFixit team, known for examining the internal structure of electronic devices, rated the new laptop's repairability at 6 out of 10.
According to Redaksiya, this is the highest score achieved for the MacBook series in the last 14 years. One of the key factors contributing to the MacBook Neo's repairability is that the battery is secured with screws rather than adhesive. This change makes battery replacement a simpler and more routine operation.
The device's simple internal design also facilitates the repair process. Once the back panel is removed, there is direct access to the battery, speakers, ports, and trackpad. The simplified antenna system allows the screen to be more easily separated from the chassis. Although replacing the keyboard requires removing 41 screws and disconnecting cables, the fact that the keyboard is not riveted to the upper chassis, as in other models, is a significant advantage. The battery being secured with screws also aids in this process.
Apple's preference for a mechanical trackpad over the Force Touch trackpad is also considered a positive step from a repairability standpoint. Additionally, the sizes of the Torx Plus screws used inside the chassis are clearly labeled, which assists technicians during repairs. Some positive changes made in recent years have also been preserved. According to iFixit, Apple's Repair Assistant system recognized all tested spare parts without issues. The USB-C ports and headphone jack are modularly designed, meaning their replacement does not require intervention with the motherboard.
However, some limitations do exist. In the Neo model, the RAM and storage modules are soldered to the motherboard, which restricts future upgrade possibilities. The pentalobe screws used on the bottom cover are also rated negatively in terms of repairability. While iFixit considers the Neo's repairability successful, it is still too early to say if this experience will extend to other MacBook models. Priced at $599 ($499 for educational institutions), this model is primarily targeted at the education market. It is noted that easily repairable devices are a significant criterion for large-volume purchases in this segment. Nevertheless, new European Union regulations are expected to compel Apple to produce more easily repairable devices.
