Google is not limiting its Android-based operating system for cars to just infotainment systems, but aims to transform it into the central processing power of future vehicles. To this end, the company has introduced a new open-source version – “Android Automotive OS for Software Defined Vehicles (AAOS SDV)”. This new system is designed to make it easier for car manufacturers to integrate advanced technologies into new models faster and at a lower cost.
According to the information, in the current Android Automotive OS structure, data obtained from various modules in the car is displayed on the central screen. However, each component requires its own software, and this data is transmitted to the car's main system. In the new AAOS SDV approach, Google plans to be the primary software that directly controls many non-driving-related functions. This will allow many components, from seat adjustments to the air conditioning system, lighting, and displays, to be controlled independently of third-party applications.
According to the company, this structure will allow car manufacturers to offer faster wireless (OTA) updates that are not limited to the infotainment system but target specific components in the car. Additionally, features such as more advanced voice assistants, proactive maintenance alerts, personalized driver profiles, and remote cabin climate control will be possible. The virtualization technology offered by AAOS SDV allows developers to work on the software before the hardware is ready and ensures that teams in different parts of the world can work in parallel on the same project.
A significant part of Google's initiative is based on a new standard signal catalog. The company wants all manufacturers to use a common command set instead of different methods to control various components. This approach can reduce costs by minimizing engineering redundancies, but it will require suppliers to adapt to the new rules defined by Google.
A similar step was previously tested by Apple with CarPlay Ultra, but many car manufacturers were not enthusiastic about handing over vehicle control to an external company. So far, only Aston Martin has adopted this system, and Porsche is expected to offer support soon. AAOS SDV is currently used in the Renault Trafic e-Tech model and is planned to be introduced to more manufacturers within the year.
