European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Sunday that she will meet with US President Donald Trump in Scotland.
The editorial staff reports that von der Leyen shared this on the social platform “X”, stating, “We will discuss transatlantic trade relations and how we can strengthen these ties.”
The meeting's location in Scotland has drawn attention. Donald Trump is currently on a five-day visit to the United Kingdom, during which he will visit two golf courses he owns.
Trade to be the main topic of the meeting
Following Trump's potential return to presidential duties in early 2025, the implementation of new customs regulations between Europe and the US in the industrial, automotive, and energy sectors has come to the fore. Strengthening trade relations in these specific areas will be the main topic of discussion at the meeting with von der Leyen.
Trump–Starmer meeting also expected
The White House previously announced that Trump would also meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This meeting is expected to cover NATO, the war in Ukraine, and US-UK economic relations.
Donald Trump's European tour could send important signals regarding the future direction of US and EU relations at a time when global power balances are being reshaped.
