Ukraine's government has updated its decision regarding the testing of the 5G network in the country. According to this decision, the new generation technology will be tested in the cities of Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodyanka. This step is one of the significant moves towards the development of Ukraine's digital infrastructure and the implementation of modern communication capabilities.
Redaksiya reports that the selection of Kharkiv and Borodyanka cities, particularly due to the widespread destruction caused by the war, stems from the necessity to test new technology in complex conditions. The implementation of 5G technology in these cities is of great importance for restoring modern communication capabilities and ensuring the population's access to quality internet.
According to Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development, military aircraft, radars, and other electronic warfare systems must be taken into account during the implementation of 5G technology. Fedorov added that 5G operates at specific frequencies and a certain compatibility must be ensured. For this reason, long-term cooperation and testing have been conducted with military structures. According to Fedorov, the use of 5G will begin in these cities, or rather, in certain parts of the cities, in the coming weeks. This is an important first step that will be expanded in the future.
Last year in May, 5G technology was first used in test mode in Ukraine. At that time, Vodafone operator and Nokia company organized a telebridge connecting Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, and Helsinki to test the quality of 5G communication. Mykhailo Fedorov, First Deputy Prime Minister for Digital Transformation, announced on his TikTok live stream that pilot zones for 5G technology would be created in two cities in January. Later, Stanislav Pribitko, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, noted that the full-scale implementation of 5G technology in Ukraine would only be possible after the end of martial law.
It was reported that by the end of July 2025, a new generation communication network with speeds of up to 10 Gbit per second was tested at the Kyiv Aviation Institute (KAI) in Kyiv. It was emphasized that expanding such projects in wartime conditions is difficult. A pilot project for the new generation communication technology 5G will be launched in two cities in Ukraine in the coming weeks. Pilot zones for this new technology will start operating in certain centers of two cities as early as January.
