A series of technical failures on Amazon's website and infrastructure has led to an emergency meeting at the company. Code changes made with artificial intelligence (AI) tools are cited as one of the main causes for these disruptions. The company itself admits that "best practices and safety measures have not yet been fully established" in this area.
The editorial reports that an outage in AWS infrastructure in December was felt by many users. This incident occurred as a result of developers agreeing to the AI agent Kiro's suggestion to "recreate the environment." This month, another incident was recorded: a portion of Amazon's functions became unusable for 6 hours due to a misapplied software update. In response to this situation, Senior Vice President Dave Treadwell is now requiring junior and mid-level developers to obtain approval from their colleagues for any changes made with AI.
According to the Financial Times newspaper, several engineers at Amazon attribute the increase in incidents to the layoffs conducted at the company. It is noted that Amazon laid off 16,000 employees in January alone. The company, however, denies these claims.
