Former MI6 chief and ex-British Ambassador to Ankara, Richard Moore, spoke at a conference on "Intelligence, Diplomacy, and Modern Conflict," sharing his thoughts on the core principles of modern intelligence operations and the role of the human factor. He stated that while signals intelligence allows for unique data acquisition, being close to one of the generals in the system creates an understanding of the process's "context."
The editorial reports that Richard Moore emphasized the significant role of human psychology in the field of intelligence during his speech. According to him, people become more vulnerable and careless when their egos are high, which makes them open to observation. Moore noted that intelligence officers must be able to correctly assess these very points.
During his address at the conference, Richard Moore also touched upon the issue of secrecy. He stated that in the modern era, it is necessary to be less secretive compared to previous years while protecting secrets, and regaining public trust is important. Moore stressed that sharing the work done with the British public during his tenure played a significant role in shaping the organization's image.
The former MI6 chief added that this open approach was also necessary to attract talented individuals from various segments of society to the organization. According to him, the fact that MI6 was not perceived as relevant by some social groups in earlier periods made the application of new approaches inevitable, and the steps taken in this direction have yielded positive results in the long term.
