Guinea-Bissau President Umaru Sissoku Embalo has reportedly been detained by the military amidst an attempted coup in the country. The head of state is said to be held under control at the General Staff office.
The editorial office reports that military sources told AFP that Embalo is being held with “good treatment” and that the situation has been brought under full control. The military also announced that they have halted the process of the presidential elections held in the country.
According to reports, high-ranking officers also confirmed that along with the president, the Chief of General Staff and the Minister of Internal Affairs have also been detained. Further information regarding the fate of Embalo, who was reportedly in a strong position as a candidate for a second term in the elections, is awaited.
It is noted that the political situation in the country remains tense, while the military leadership has declared that it has taken full control of the administration.
