Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Alexandr Esaulenko, participated in the event for planting local grape varieties of the Republic of Moldova, held on the experimental laboratory grounds of the Viticulture and Winemaking Institute in Madrasa village, Shamakhi district, at the invitation of the Viticulture and Winemaking Institute of the Republic of Azerbaijan and its director Vugar Salimov.
Within the framework of the event, saplings of Floricica, Fetească Neagră, Legenda, Plăvaie, and 9 other local grape varieties imported from the Republic of Moldova, including Moldova and Viorica, were planted on a 1-hectare area.
This initiative opens new opportunities for strengthening cooperation between Moldova and Azerbaijan at the level of specialized institutions and creates important prospects in terms of technical knowledge exchange, joint experiments, and the application of Moldovan experience.
Moldovan grape varieties are distinguished by their high productivity and agricultural potential – for example, the Moldova variety has already demonstrated its ability to yield a stable harvest of 35–40 tons per hectare in Azerbaijani conditions. In addition to these indicators, the grape varieties also stand out for their frost resistance, humidity tolerance, and good storage and transport capabilities, making them ideal for both fresh consumption, winemaking, and export.
Considering these characteristics, Moldovan grape varieties can also be tested in other traditional viticulture regions of Azerbaijan, including the Karabakh region, as this area is known for its rich history and culture of grape and wine production.
🇲🇩🇦🇿 The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Azerbaijan will continue to promote dialogue and cooperation in the field of viticulture and winemaking, striving to build bridges between the specialized institutions of both countries.
We extend our deep gratitude to the Moldovan side, especially to local entrepreneur Gheorghe Gaberi. He is a viticulture enthusiast who works with great enthusiasm and dedication in the cultivation, preservation, and promotion of local grape varieties. The sapling material he generously provided played a significant role in the implementation of this experimental and symbolic initiative.
Agriculture, particularly viticulture, offers broad opportunities for the development of bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Azerbaijan. Initiatives like this are concrete steps taken towards deepening cooperation.
