A new scientific study indicates that negative emission technologies and practices could pose a threat to global resource supply and ecological limits. Redaksiya reports that a study conducted by Selene Kobo, Angel Galan-Martin, and Gonzalo Guillen-Gosalbez assessed the life cycle of various negative emission technologies between 2030 and 2050. This assessment included mineral resources, human health, and absolute sustainability indicators. The study's findings have revealed previously overlooked challenges in the application of these technologies.
Specifically, it was determined that technologies such as biochar and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage could drastically increase demand for nutrients, potentially worsening food security. Simultaneously, methods like direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) and ocean liming, despite having fewer side effects, could critically increase the extraction levels of essential mineral resources.
These findings will help guide the sustainable and safe expansion of the carbon dioxide removal industry.
