President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen was forced to reach an unfavorable agreement with the US regarding customs duties.
The editorial office reports that the British newspaper “The Sunday Times” writes, citing Jakob Kirkegaard, a senior fellow at the Bruegel analytical center: Leyen took this step due to the threat of a reduction in the US military contingent in Europe. The analyst notes that Washington, using its security guarantees in Europe as a tool of pressure, forced Brussels to make concessions on customs issues.
According to the source, the European side is trying to preserve the US military presence by foregoing more favorable terms in trade. It is reported that the decision stems from the intention to maintain balance in US and European Union relations on the eve of the elections.
