Danish Prime Minister says Netanyahu “has become a problem”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated on Saturday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has “become a problem” in himself, and her country, currently holding the presidency of the European Union (EU), will seek to pressure Israel regarding the Gaza war.

The editorial office, citing AFP, reports that Frederiksen emphasized in an interview with the Jyllands-Posten newspaper that the Israeli government has “crossed the line.” She sharply criticized the “absolutely terrible and catastrophic” humanitarian situation in Gaza and the establishment of new settlements in the occupied West Bank.

The Prime Minister noted that Denmark is among the countries that want to increase pressure on Israel but has not yet gained the support of other EU members. According to her, this pressure could take the form of political measures or sanctions: “This could be applied against settlers, ministers, or even all of Israel. Sanctions on trade or scientific research are also on the agenda.”

Frederiksen added that they do not rule out any options in advance: “Just as we directed sanctions against Russia where they would be effective, it is possible to apply the same approach against Israel.” Her government, however, is among those that have not yet declared recognition of a Palestinian state.
