UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine Francesca Albanese stated that Hamas should be recognized as a political force.
The editorial office reports that in her speech, Albanese recalled that Hamas came to power in 2005 by winning democratic elections. She emphasized that the organization is not merely an armed group but possesses political legitimacy.
“People have no idea what Hamas is. Hamas won the elections in 2005, established an education system, opened hospitals, and became the governing authority in Gaza,” Albanese noted.
According to her, a correct understanding of the reality in the region is of great importance for determining the steps of the international community.
