UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made an important statement regarding the recognition of the Palestinian state. He stated that if Israel fails to fulfill certain humanitarian and diplomatic obligations, Britain may officially recognize the state of Palestine in September.
The editorial office reports that Starmer made this statement at a time of increasing pressure from the international community and within his party. He noted that the UK supports the principle of a two-state solution and that it is essential for the parties to adhere to international law norms to ensure peace in the region.
It should be recalled that in recent days, calls for the recognition of Palestine have intensified both in the European Union and in Arab countries. Italy, France, and Belgium have also expressed similar positions. The US, however, has approached these initiatives cautiously, stating that such steps could encourage armed groups in the region.
Starmer's statement could further intensify diplomatic discussions ahead of the UN General Assembly session scheduled for September.
