The US Department of the Treasury has announced new economic sanctions due to the Russian government's 'lack of serious engagement' in the peace process in Ukraine. The decision aims to increase pressure on Russia's energy sector and limit revenue opportunities for the Kremlin's war machine.
The editorial office reports that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated: “Now is the time to stop the killings and for an immediate ceasefire. Due to President Vladimir Putin's refusal to end this senseless war, the Treasury Department is imposing sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies. If necessary, we are prepared to take additional steps to support President Trump's efforts to stop the war.”
The sanctions apply to “Rosneft” and “Lukoil” companies, as well as their numerous subsidiaries operating within Russia. All assets of these entities in the US or under the control of US citizens have been frozen. OFAC also warned that foreign financial institutions cooperating with these companies may also face secondary sanctions.
The Ministry stated that the purpose of the sanctions is not to punish, but to achieve a change in behavior. The US government called on Moscow to begin “good-faith negotiations” and immediately join a ceasefire agreement for the restoration of lasting peace in Ukraine.
