The position of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on elections and the views of former US President Donald Trump on this matter have become one of the main topics of international discussion in recent days. This issue reflects the possibility of holding elections amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine and the positions of various political circles regarding it.
Redaksiya reports, citing TRT Haber, that Donald Trump has emphasized the importance of holding elections in Ukraine, stating that it is already overdue. Trump claimed that the war is being used to prevent elections from being held, noting that the Ukrainian people have the right to make this choice. He also touched upon the issue of democracy, not ruling out the possibility that Zelensky could win if elections were held.
Zelensky's statement that he is prepared for elections was a response to Trump's views on the matter. Zelensky clearly expressed his position by emphasizing that he is always ready to hold elections. At the same time, Zelensky held a series of meetings in European capitals and gave interviews to leading Italian newspapers Repubblica and Messaggero before meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, the capital of Italy.
Anitta Hipper, a spokesperson for the European Union (EU) Commission, also emphasized that Ukraine is going through an "exceptional" period and that Russia's war against Ukraine continues. Hipper noted that Zelensky is the democratically elected leader of Ukraine and stated that elections in Ukraine should be held when conditions are appropriate. Zelensky also expressed his trust in Italian Prime Minister Meloni regarding peace talks. These statements indicate that the issue of holding elections in Ukraine is being discussed on the international stage and that various political leaders have different positions on this matter.
