Agreements reached between Azerbaijan and the US within the framework of the Azerbaijani President's visit to the US, and the results within the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process, are of historical importance. The meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan, the US, and Armenia in Washington, and the signed documents, represent another diplomatic victory for our country. The Azerbaijani leader delivered messages of peace from the US, calling for lasting peace and stability in the South Caucasus.
It can be stated with certainty that historic achievements, calculated for a long-term perspective,
were made during the Washington meeting.
The Joint Declaration signed by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as by the US President as a witness, will contribute to ensuring peace and stability in the region. Thus, a historic opportunity was seized for the South Caucasus to achieve peace and prosperity.
The initialing of the peace agreement, as well as the joint call for the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group, should also be regarded as a push for peace. Another provision of particular importance in the Joint Declaration is the clause regarding the opening of transport communications between the two countries. Here, it was emphasized that within the framework of opening communications in the region, it is necessary to ensure unhindered connection between the main part of Azerbaijan and its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The agreement regarding the Zangezur Corridor
is particularly important for both the region and the world, including in the context of opening communications and developing ties between Turkey and the Turkic world. This also increases Azerbaijan's prospect of becoming a transit country with stronger positions. As our head of state also stated, corridors passing through our territory bring finance, create jobs, and political influence.
The Azerbaijani side expects that the Armenian constitution will be amended to remove territorial claims against Azerbaijan for the signing of the final Peace Agreement.
Mr. President's visit to the US was also marked by important moments in terms of the new character of relations between Baku and Washington.
Thus, a strategic cooperation format with the US has already begun. Within the framework of the visit, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on the establishment of a Strategic Working Group for the purpose of preparing a Strategic Partnership Charter, aimed at elevating relations between Baku and Washington to the level of strategic partnership. This is of particular importance in terms of establishing an institutional framework for bilateral practical cooperation. The Charter clearly defines future cooperation directions. This plans to prioritize areas such as regional connectivity, including energy, trade, and transit; economic investment, including artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure; as well as defense, security, and counter-terrorism.
The repeal of the 907th Amendment, in turn, is another political success for Azerbaijan. As Mr. President put it, Azerbaijan does not need any financial support, but there is symbolism here. The repeal of the unjust 907th Amendment after 33 years, with the participation of the Azerbaijani leader, carries symbolic significance and is a sign of respect for our head of state.
Thus, high-level Azerbaijan-US relations allow for the establishment of peace in the South Caucasus. This is a great opportunity not only for our region but also for the entire world.
