Ukraine has recorded significant progress in drilling new gas wells in 2023. This is an indicator of important steps taken towards ensuring the country's energy security and increasing gas production. This process continues even under wartime conditions and has a positive impact on the country's economy.
Redaksiya reports that, according to an expert, 150 new gas wells were drilled in Ukraine in 2023, which is the highest annual figure since 2018, when a stimulating tax for new drilling was introduced. In 2024, 140 wells were drilled, and 74 wells were drilled in the first year of full-scale invasion. Against this backdrop, drilling 136 new wells in 2025, while not a record, is a sufficiently good result considering the mass shelling.
In December, the State Geological and Subsoil Resources Service sold the special permit for the development of the Lyubynets gas-oil field located in Lviv region after six attempts. Funds obtained from the sale of the special permit will be transferred to the state budget and, in accordance with Ukraine's international obligations, will be directed to the American-Ukrainian fund for recovery investments.
The expert notes that "After every attack, Ukrainian producers try to eliminate the consequences as quickly as possible, restore damaged facilities, and make titanic efforts to stabilize gas production. Despite all the difficulties and destruction, our own gas is essential and provides a large part of consumption in Ukraine."
He also noted that new gas wells were drilled this year. Moreover, the total number of wells drilled during the period of full-scale war reaches 500 by 2025. At the same time, most of these wells were drilled before the agreement with the USA was signed.
"Despite Russia's aggression and regular strikes on production facilities, producers continue to drill new wells. Moreover, they are even setting records. This year, according to the Association's calculations, companies have started drilling 136 wells," said Petrenko.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 500 new gas wells have been drilled in Ukraine, including 136 wells in 2025. This was stated by Artem Petrenko, Executive Director of the Association of Gas Producers of Ukraine, in an interview with UNIAN.
He noted that it is precisely thanks to new drilling and restoration work after Russian shelling that Ukraine can maintain its gas production and continue its operations.
In the first 5 months of 2024, specialists from JSC "Ukrgazdobuvannya" commissioned 36 new wells, 11 of which are high-yield, meaning they produce more than 100,000 cubic meters of gas per day.
He recalled that there have been 24 massive, combined attacks on Ukraine's gas infrastructure in 2025.
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, 500 gas wells have already been drilled in Ukraine.
