Syrian President Ahmed Shara has arrived in New York to participate in the meetings of the UN General Assembly. This will be the first Syrian president to attend UN meetings since 1967. The information was disseminated by the Syrian state agency SANA.
The editorial, citing Reuters, reports that Shara, who was formerly one of the leaders of Al-Qaeda and had a $10 million bounty placed on his head, achieved a significant diplomatic success in May by holding a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Riyadh. Following that meeting, Washington lifted a large part of the sanctions imposed against Syria. The Trump administration stated its support for Shara's efforts to unite and stabilize the country.
According to the information, the Syrian leader will deliver his first speech at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, which will open on Tuesday.
