Researchers from Cork and Galway universities have determined that scented candles, frequently used in daily life, increase the level of fine dust in the air by 15 times more than the limit recommended by the World Health Organization.
When burning scented candles or incense, the following toxic gases are released into the environment:
Sulfur dioxide
Carbon monoxide
Nitrogen oxide
The effect of these gases can be 4 times stronger and more dangerous than smoke from cigarettes.
Health risks
Short-term effects: Irritation in the lungs, eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, sneezing, and difficulty breathing.
Long-term effects: Increased risk of chronic bronchitis, cardiovascular diseases, and lung cancer.
Particles released by candles can trigger asthma attacks.
Are natural candles completely safe?
Some people prefer candles made from natural beeswax to reduce risks. However, research shows that these are not entirely safe either. Some components in such candles can react with ozone in the room air, creating toxic by-products.(milli.az)
