The editorial board reports that this is not the first incident this week. On Monday, 13 bullets were fired at the home of an Indianapolis city council member who had previously supported the construction of a data center. A note reading "no to data centers" was found at the scene. An increase in violence is observed in artificial intelligence discussions.
The reason for this situation is quite simple: due to the rapid pace of development and hundreds of billions of dollars in investments, artificial intelligence has become a polarizing topic. Presidents, senators, and other officials have begun to comment on the release of models, discuss them, and propose all kinds of bans, incentives, and regulations. Politicization, while not inherently creating violence, attracts an audience for whom violence is already a tool. When we add Iran's bombing of AWS data centers, followed by the UAE's threats to bomb the Stargate facility (all based on Yudkovsky's teachings), we get a dangerous mixture. Although these incidents did not occur because of artificial intelligence, the Overton window has shifted, and examples of how much the situation can escalate already exist. It seems this is just the beginning, and the situation will only get worse.
