Morgan McSweeney, chief of staff to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, resigned on Sunday amid growing criticism over his role in advising on the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States. This event marks a significant shift and discussion point in British politics.

Redaksiya reports that in a resignation statement obtained by The Guardian, McSweeney stated that the decision to appoint Mandelson was "wrong" and took full responsibility for recommending it, calling his resignation the "only honorable path." He noted that Mandelson "damaged trust in our party, our country, and politics," emphasizing that the decision to resign was not easy. McSweeney stated that this controversy had shaken public trust and demanded fundamental changes in the government's vetting and due diligence processes, while also reaffirming his support for Starmer and the Labour government's agenda.

Emails and documents released by the Ministry of Justice in January show that Mandelson contacted Jeffrey Epstein after being convicted of two offenses involving a minor in 2008. According to the Associated Press, newly discovered documents suggest that Mandelson may have passed sensitive government information to Epstein after the 2008 global financial crisis. The publication also refers to documents and financial records showing that Epstein transferred a total of $75,000 to accounts associated with Mandelson or his partner, Reynaldo Avila da Silva, in 2003 and 2004. Foreign Secretary Stephen Doughty informed the House of Commons on September 11 that Starmer had asked Mandelson to withdraw his appointment as ambassador to the US after emails showed Mandelson's connection to Epstein was "significantly different" from when he was appointed. Doughty stated, "Specifically, the suggestion that Lord Mandelson believed Jeffrey Epstein's initial conviction was unlawful and should be challenged is new information." "In light of this, and with consideration for the victims of Epstein's horrific crimes, as we all know, Lord Mandelson has been immediately relieved of his duties as ambassador." Mandelson resigned from the Labour Party on February 1.
