Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated in an interview with CNN that the pressures exerted by US President Donald Trump's administration on Venezuela are not related to democracy or the fight against drugs, but rather aim to gain access to the country's vast oil reserves.

Petro emphasized that Venezuela is not a major drug producer and noted that the Trump administration's policies were shaped against a backdrop of personal political contradictions. He added that the sanctions imposed against him and the revocation of his visa also stem from these political disputes.

According to Petro, Washington's regional policy is based on economic interests, and this approach creates negative consequences for the countries of the region. He emphasized the importance of a more transparent and mutually respectful policy in relations with the United States.
