The international community is paying attention to the statements of Iran's permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani. Iravani stated that if Iran is subjected to any military attack, it will respond decisively and proportionally using its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations (UN) Charter.
Redaksiya reports that in a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, Iravani emphasized the continuation of threats of "use of force" by the United States. He noted that this situation clearly violates the UN Charter and international law and carries the risk of dragging the region into a new crisis and instability. Iravani stated that the statements of US President Donald Trump "carry real risks of attack," and that the consequences would be catastrophic for the region and pose a serious threat to international peace and security.
Expressing Iran's commitment to UN principles and diplomatic solutions, Iravani stated that they are conducting serious, good-faith, and constructive nuclear negotiations with the US government. He noted that if the US approaches these negotiations seriously and sincerely, and respects UN principles and international law, a lasting and balanced solution would be possible. In this context, Iravani called on all members of the UN Security Council and Secretary-General Guterres to urge the US to immediately end threats of unlawful use of force, fulfill its obligations under the UN Charter, and refrain from any actions that could lead to military conflict, which could further escalate tensions and have severe consequences for regional and international peace and security.
Iravani added, "The Security Council must not allow the normalization and legalization of threats of the use of force. If such illegal behavior is not addressed, it will be the turn of another sovereign member state." He reiterated that in the event of a military attack, Iran will respond decisively and proportionally using its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. In this case, Iravani stated that "all bases, facilities, and assets belonging to the enemy in the region will be legitimate targets," and noted that the US "will bear full and direct responsibility for unpredictable and uncontrolled consequences."
