Google is internally working on a project called Aluminium OS, codenamed ALOS. This project aims to unify the Google ecosystem on a single platform by creating a new desktop-level operating system based on Android. Aluminium OS is intended to replace ChromeOS by offering a more powerful user experience for laptops, tablets, and premium personal computers.
Reporting with reference to Android Authority, initial versions of Aluminium OS are built on Android 16, with a consumer release planned for 2026 based on Android 17. Deep integration of Gemini artificial intelligence at the system level is envisioned, with a Gemini icon in the status bar indicating its role in key functions such as file organization, text writing assistance, and background automation.
The interface of the new operating system will combine an Android status bar with a ChromeOS-style taskbar. Simultaneously, window management and split-screen multitasking will be supported. Aluminium OS will be able to run over 3 million Android applications through the Google Play Store and will bring desktop Chrome browser extensions to the Android-based platform.
According to Google's strategy, a three-tiered approach to hardware will be implemented: AL Entry, AL Mass Premium, and AL Premium segments. According to WIRED, a full and stable version of the system may not be introduced until 2028, while support for ChromeOS will continue until at least 2034.
