In the last year, an increase in the risk of death due to heart attack among young people has been observed in Azerbaijan. Particularly noteworthy is the rise in consultations related to cardiovascular problems among schoolchildren and students.
Cardiologist Dr. Emil Hasilov stated that a significant increase in consultations regarding cardiovascular diseases has been recorded among individuals aged 30-40 recently. According to him, the number of young patients transported to hospitals by emergency medical teams has also increased.
Why Have Death Rates Among Youth Increased in Azerbaijan? – A WARNING FROM A CARDIOLOGIST
The doctor explains this increase with several factors. These include the complications of the COVID-19 pandemic, increased stress during and after the pandemic, a growing tendency towards harmful habits, excessive consumption of energy drinks, decreased physical activity, and social factors. Especially with the development of technology, young people spending more time in virtual environments leads them to a sedentary lifestyle.
"Dozens of young people aged 20-30 are already seeking help for obesity, diabetes, and arterial hypertension. Unfortunately, most of them do not adhere to the prescribed treatment and recommendations," the doctor noted.
According to him, impaired cholesterol metabolism, excess weight, a sedentary lifestyle, and co-existing diseases increase the risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and cerebrovascular events in young people. This, in turn, leads to an increase in death rates.
The cardiologist appealed to young people, recommending they prioritize a healthy lifestyle:
"Keep your weight under control, regularly measure your blood pressure, and consult a doctor without delay if you have any problems. This can prevent serious complications in the future."
The doctor also recalled that a 35-year-old patient recently died due to the blockage of three coronary arteries and severe heart failure developed after a heart attack, emphasizing that such cases are a serious warning for society.
It should be noted that the number of deaths from circulatory system diseases was 34,423 in 2022, 33,183 in 2023, and 33,289 in 2024. Cardiovascular diseases account for approximately 54–60% of all deaths in Azerbaijan. According to recent data, Azerbaijan is one of the countries with the highest mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases in the world.
