Recent events within the European Union (EU) Commission have revealed tensions following a question posed by a newly appointed Italian journalist. This incident has brought discussions about the EU's approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict back into the spotlight.
Redaksiya reports that Italian journalist Nunziati, newly appointed to a position in Brussels, addressed EU Commission spokespersons at a press conference on October 13, reminding them of their repeated statements that Russia should pay reparations for Ukraine's reconstruction. He then posed a question regarding Israel's destruction of almost all of the Gaza Strip's territory and civilian infrastructure: "Do you believe Israel should pay reparations for Gaza's reconstruction?"
Following this question, Italian MEP Gitano Pedulla, a member of the European Parliament's (EP) Left group, announced a few days later that Nunziati had been fired. This incident sparked criticism regarding the EU's stance on Israel's actions in Gaza.
The EU Commission, led by German politician Ursula von der Leyen, is accused of taking a pro-Tel Aviv stance regarding the events perpetrated by Israel in Gaza. This situation raises questions about the EU's adherence to international law and human rights.
Chief spokesperson Paula Pinho, in response to the question, stated, "This is indeed an interesting question, and I will not comment at this stage." This response further increased the uncertainty of the EU's position on the matter.
Nunziati, confirming the incident to an Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondent, stated that he could not disclose details. This indicates that the reasons and objectives behind the incident are not entirely clear.
