US President Donald Trump announced during a meeting with NATO leader Mark Rutte at the White House that he had canceled his meeting with Putin, stating that this decision “did not feel right” to him and that the meeting could be reconsidered in the future. Trump emphasized that it was time for sanctions against Russia and noted that training for the use of Tomahawk missiles requires at least six months; he stated that the US's own missiles are not currently in use, while Ukraine is using missiles from European countries.
The editorial board reports that Trump also commented on his policy regarding naval attacks, stating that he had said, “if enemies' attacks from land increase in the future, they will be met with a harsh response on the spot.” He voiced strong criticism against Colombian President Gustavo Petro, claiming widespread drug production in the country and speaking of “serious measures.” Trump also stated that he had discussed “de-escalation” talks on nuclear issues with Vladimir Putin and supported this approach; he noted that the US is ready to discuss nuclear reduction, which could include Russia and, in the future, China.
During the meeting, Trump also emphasized the importance of dialogue and negotiations, saying, “Putin and Zelensky must be reasonable — peace requires agreement from both sides.” He conveyed his view that Putin previously wanted “everyone” but is now more inclined towards negotiations, and stated that the goal in the Ukraine issue is to find an acceptable solution for all parties.
