The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan politician and public figure María Corina Machado. According to the decision of the Nobel Committee, Machado was deemed worthy of the award for her long-term struggle for democracy in Venezuela and her contributions to the protection of civil liberties.
Redaksiya reports that although US President Donald Trump's chances of receiving this year's award were highly rated, the Norwegian Nobel Committee made its choice in a different direction. The Committee emphasized its commitment to the continuous promotion of peace and the defense of democratic values.
María Corina Machado is a former deputy of the Venezuelan National Assembly and has been at the forefront of the democratic movement against authoritarian rule for years. The awarding of the prize to her at a time when the Venezuelan crisis continues is regarded internationally as a “symbol of hope and change”.
