US President Donald Trump spoke about his family's relationship with the royal family while welcoming King Charles III and Queen Camilla of Great Britain at the White House.
The editorial staff reports that in his speech, Trump recalled that his mother, Mary MacLeod, was born on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland and stated that she showed great interest in the British royal family.
According to Trump, his mother carefully watched ceremonies attended by Queen Elizabeth II on television. He said that his mother loved the royal family very much and would tell him, “Donald, look how beautiful it is,” when watching such events.
The US president also joked about King Charles III in his speech. Trump stated that his mother once considered young Charles very handsome and had an “admiration for Charles.”
After these words, Trump turned to King Charles III, who was seated behind him, and explained that this was a memory related to his mother. He jokingly said, “My mother had a soft spot for Charles. Can you believe it?”
In his speech, Trump called King Charles III a “gentle person” and also praised his speaking style. The President stated that the King had a “beautiful accent.”
The ceremony at the White House was attended by Vice President JD Vance, Second Lady Usha Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and other high-ranking officials.
King Charles III is also scheduled to address a joint session of the US Congress as part of his visit. Trump, however, stated that he would not attend that speech but would like to go.
