The new government formed after years of war within Syria is taking radical steps to alleviate the country's economic crisis. The Syrian pound, which has rapidly lost value in recent years, is currently circulating at the 10,000 level in the market.
The editorial office reports that the new government will issue new banknotes on December 8, and two zeros will be removed from the national currency. The most notable change is that the portraits of Bashar al-Assad and his father Hafez al-Assad will no longer appear on the banknotes.
According to the Syrian Central Bank, a cooperation agreement has been reached with the Russian state company “Goznak” for the production of the new banknotes. This company had also participated in printing Syrian currency during the Assad regime's rule.
According to experts, removing zeros from the currency unit alone will not eliminate inflation and the economic crisis. However, the new government considers this step important both for economic stability and for sending a message of “new beginning” to the public.
