Sam Altman Unveils $1.4 Trillion AI Infrastructure Plan

OpenAI head Sam Altman has unveiled the company's most ambitious infrastructure project to date.

The editorial office reports that Altman stated the company plans a $1.4 trillion investment to increase its AI computing power to 30 gigawatts. He noted that he aims to create an additional 1 gigawatt of computing power every week in the future. Currently, each gigawatt is valued at over $40 billion. Although Altman said these costs would halve over time, he did not explain how this would happen.

Altman stated that for the plan to be realized, OpenAI must generate "hundreds of billions in annual revenue." The company is expected to reach $20 billion in annual revenue by the end of this year. Achieving this target requires OpenAI to grow approximately tenfold. The plan was announced after a new restructuring agreement signed with Microsoft, which removes the company's fundraising limitations. Altman indicated that an initial public offering (IPO) is the most realistic path.

In January, Altman had presented a $500 billion infrastructure project called "Stargate" with the participation of US President Donald Trump. The project, implemented with the involvement of Oracle, SoftBank, Nvidia, and CoreWeave, was initially designed for 10 gigawatts of power, but this figure has now been tripled.

Experts state that the scale planned by Altman is unprecedented in the history of technology. Creating 1 gigawatt of power every week translates to approximately $2 trillion in capital expenditure annually. This exceeds the combined capital expenditures of Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta in 2024 by five times.

Analysts, however, warn that some of OpenAI's financial operations, particularly mutual investment agreements with Nvidia, may have artificially inflated the company's real revenue figures. Nevertheless, Altman claims that this infrastructure will create a turning point in the history of artificial intelligence.
