Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan, has addressed a letter to the Montenegrin Ombudsman, Siniša Bjeković, regarding the detention of several Azerbaijani citizens in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, in recent days.
The Commissioner appealed to her Montenegrin counterpart, requesting him to take the matter under his control and ensure the protection of the rights of Azerbaijani citizens currently in custody, in accordance with Montenegro's national legislation and international human rights obligations.
The Ombudsman emphasized the importance of ensuring the rights of the detained individuals, including the presumption of innocence, access to legal assistance, and the right to use an interpreter.
Sabina Aliyeva also stressed the importance of preventing any discrimination, hate speech, or hostile attitudes based on ethnic, national, or religious grounds, in accordance with the principles of equality and non-discrimination enshrined in international documents.
