Sanctions Push North Korea into Fuel Smuggling

North Korea's exposure to international sanctions severely impacts the country's economy. This situation leads Pyongyang to acquire fuel through various means, especially via sea. Such activities not only violate United Nations (UN) resolutions but also pose a threat to regional security.

Redaksiya reports that the harsh sanctions imposed on North Korea due to its nuclear weapons and missile programs have restricted the country's international trade. These restrictions make it difficult for Pyongyang to obtain vital resources like fuel. Illicit transfers at sea are one of the main ways North Korea acquires fuel amidst its isolation from the international community. Such operations are typically carried out at night or in areas close to international waters.

UN sanctions prohibit the sale of fuel, weapons, and other strategic goods to North Korea. However, despite these prohibitions, illicit transfers continue. This necessitates international organizations and individual countries to take more serious measures to increase the effectiveness of sanctions. Preventing such activities is crucial for maintaining regional stability and preventing the development of North Korea's nuclear program.
