The possibility of Russia being disconnected from the global internet if there is foreign interference in the 2026 State Duma elections has been raised. This was stated by the First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee during his speech. According to him, this year alone, the Remote Electronic Voting (REV) system, the Central Election Commission, and a number of gubernatorial elections have already been subjected to cyberattacks.
The official stated that the number of attacks is expected to increase towards 2026, and the main source of risk will be the internet environment. It is noted that if mass sabotage or prohibited activities occur, the scenario of Russia being completely disconnected from the global network could be considered.
Later, commenting on the issue, Aleksandr Boyarski, Chairman of the State Duma's profile committee, stated that Russia's disconnection from the global internet is not currently planned, and such a decision is not on the agenda.
