New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Sworn in on the Quran

Zohran Mamdani began his duties as the Mayor of New York City in the first hours of New Year's Day. The swearing-in ceremony was held in a closed format at the historic Old City Hall subway station, which was decommissioned shortly after midnight on January 1st.

The editorial reports that during the ceremony, Zohran Mamdani was sworn into office by placing his hand on the Holy Quran. With this, he made history as the first Muslim mayor of New York City, the first leader of South Asian descent, and the first mayor of African descent.

The Old City Hall subway station was opened in 1904 and is known for its architectural features as one of the city's first subway stations. Officials have stated that a public swearing-in ceremony for the mayor is planned to be held later at City Hall.
