NASA's Subsonic Flight Demonstrator (SFD) project aims to identify, select, and develop key aircraft technologies, such as new wing designs for next-generation single-aisle aircraft. This project is being carried out in collaboration with industry and other government organizations.
Redaksiya reports that transferring technologies from the research environment to the production environment can pose challenges for industrial manufacturers. Often, such promising technologies are not adopted due to various technical and economic risks.
NASA plans to partner with industry to:
Develop and flight-test advanced aircraft configurations and related technologies to significantly reduce aircraft fuel consumption.
Obtain ground data to validate the benefits of new technologies by NASA/industry teams.
Use research findings to assist industry in making decisions regarding next-generation single-aisle aircraft.
