MTS Tests Alternative Payment System for iPhone and Apple Watch

MTS has launched a pilot project that allows payments for purchases at retail outlets to be made directly from the mobile number balance. The new technology is intended for iPhone and Apple Watch users and is presented as an alternative to bank cards. The system works through Apple's official Wallet application and does not require linking a bank account. The first phase of the project is being implemented in collaboration with the Camera Obscura coffee shop chain and is currently being tested at two locations in Moscow.

According to the editorial report, no additional application download, device unlocking, or internet connection is required to use the service. Payment is confirmed via Touch ID or Face ID, and the amount is debited directly from the MTS subscriber's personal balance. This eliminates the need to use a bank card at offline retail points. The implementation of the feature across all Camera Obscura network locations is planned for early 2026, followed by other retail chains.

Technically, the solution is based on the integration of MTS's billing system with the NFC protocol, enabling payments through the built-in wallet on Apple devices. According to company representatives, this is the first such pilot project in Russia that allows payments via mobile balance on Apple devices. If the test is successful and expanded, the technology could change contactless payment habits in the country and offer a new alternative independent of banks.
