An official inquiry has been sent to the Montenegrin side to clarify the new rules and conditions of the visa regime that will be applied to citizens of Azerbaijan.
The editorial reports that Aykhan Hajizada, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, informed Operativ Media about this.
He stated that for a long time, Montenegro unilaterally applied a visa-free regime for citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan wishing to travel to this country: “However, based on the decision of the Montenegrin government, from January 15, 2026, a visa regime will be applied for citizens of Azerbaijan wishing to travel to Montenegro.”
The MFA spokesperson noted that this decision is related to the obligations undertaken by the Montenegrin government within the framework of its European Union membership process: “Our relevant inquiry has been addressed to the other party regarding what the new rules and conditions of the visa regime for our country's citizens will be. Further information will be provided in due course regarding this matter.”
It should be noted that after January 15, 2026, citizens of Azerbaijan will be able to travel to Montenegro only on a visa basis. To work or conduct business activities in this country, a residence permit of at least 1 year will be required.
New decisions regarding the visa regime were also made at the last meeting of the Montenegrin government held in December. According to the decision, citizens of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the Republic of Turkey can enter Montenegro visa-free with a valid passport, transit, and stay in the country for up to 30 days.
