A case session titled “Cognitive Impairment and Depression” was held within the business program of the “Medinex” exhibition, with the support of TABIB.
Deniz Umarova, a child and adolescent psychologist at the Children's Rehabilitation Center under the Republican Pediatrics Center, delivered a presentation on “Cognitive Models of Depression and Psychotherapeutic Approach,” while Jeyran Ahmadova, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Nafas Psychoneurological Center, spoke on “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Brain Technologies: Future Interventions.”
D. Umarova discussed depression, its main symptoms, and cognitive models of depression:
“The main principles of cognitive behavioral therapy are that thoughts shape emotions and behaviors, negative automatic thoughts cause psychological distress, and changing one's way of thinking.
During therapy, the main goals are to increase emotional well-being by changing thought patterns, strengthen a person's self-awareness and problem-solving skills, provide a short-term and goal-oriented approach, and develop the person's self-management skills after therapy.”
J. Ahmadova stated in her speech that ADHD is one of the most common mental disorders in children:
“In cases of inattention (children's inability to focus on details, frequent mistakes in their lessons, etc.), hyperactivity (the child often being unable to stay still, constant movement of hands and feet, etc.), and impulsivity (answering without waiting for the end of a question, difficulty waiting in line, etc.), parents should be vigilant and consult specialists.”
J. Ahmadova also informed participants about alternative treatment approaches, physical education and sports, diet, nutritional support, and vitamins in the aforementioned cases.
Finally, participants' questions were answered, and an exchange of ideas took place.
