The Electronic Security Service (ETX) under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport is continuing its investigations into the recent increase in unauthorized access to user accounts on the instant messaging applications "Telegram" and "WhatsApp".
ETX announced this.
It is reported that the analysis of incoming appeals and identified facts in this regard shows that in many cases, users do not utilize additional security features. In this regard, citizens are advised to activate the two-step verification function on their "Telegram" and "WhatsApp" accounts.
To activate this function in "Telegram", the user must first go to the application's "Settings" section, then select "Privacy and Security". From here, they should navigate to "Two-step verification", set an additional password, and enter an email address for recovery. In this case, access to accounts is carried out not only via SMS code but also via an OTP code sent through alternative channels. This reduces the risk of accounts being compromised.
In the "WhatsApp" application, after going to the "Settings" section, one should select "Account" and then "Two-step verification". Here, a six-digit PIN code is set, and adding an email address is recommended for account security. This PIN code is periodically requested from the user, ensuring account protection.
Nevertheless, ETX is holding continuous discussions with the official representatives of the mentioned applications to resolve the issue.
